TROLLEYS IN THE U. S.

Trolleys in Use

Historic street cars have re-emerged as a new transit mode.  Most serve markets oriented to tourism.  But, they also provide a short-headway frequent stop service well suited to local transit needs.  Experience has shown the more people will ride a trolley than a bus.  Quite, low-pollution historic trolleys blend in well with the community and their slow schedule speeds permit their riders to enjoy the experience.

There are twenty three operating historic trolley system in north America, four under construction, and an additional nineteen  system (including Aspen) are under study.  For a comprehensive review of vintage trolley operations in North America visit the APTA Heritage Trolley or the Railway Preservation sites. They cross link to each other, to the city sites, and many other relevant sources.  Comprehensive studies of why cities have chosen to implement historic transit systems and their success are available on these site.

A summary of cities with historic trolley systems similar in size and objective to that of Aspen Trolleys's are presented below.
