AT&R GOAL The goal of Aspen Trails and Rails is see a trail completed from Emma to Glenwood springs along the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad right of way by 2010. It is also a goal to preserve the operational railroad between Glenwood Springs and Carbondale.
The Denver & Rio Grande Railroad from Glenwood Springs to Aspen was completed in 1887. The lower (northern) valley railroad remained in operation into the early 1990's. The right of way from Glenwood Springs to Emma is owned by the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority (RFTA) and from Emma to Aspen by Pitkin County.
Pitkin county has completed a trail along its right of way from Aspen to Emma..
RFTA is now planning work on the trail from Emma to Glenwood Springs. AT&R supports completing the trail from Emma to Carbondale. The railroad from Glenwood Springs to Carbondale is operational for light weight trains. AT&R supports preserving this railroad for use by an excursion train, while creating a scenic trail paralleling alongside.
Having an excursion train and completed trail from Glenwood Springs to Aspen will spark the vitality and economy of the Roaring Fork Valley. -- Trails and Rails
