The Route |
|
The Glenwood Excursion Train provides an exciting ride just the right length for children and adults alike. It consists of a caboose, passenger cars, and open cars, and a quaint 45 ton diesel which operated for years at the Cameo Electric Plant, Cameo Colorado. You may wander between cars as you like. The open cars provide an excellent platform for taking pictures. Relax with seating and shelter in the passenger car. You can get refreshments in the Caboose. All aboard and enjoy your ride!
The GHT ride starts in the wye on the west edge of the Glenwood Springs historic downtown district heading south following the 128 year old route established by the Denver & Rio Grande. As you leave the wye you travel along side the river with views of the rapidly flowing water. At midpoint the majestic 12,950 foot Mt. Sopris appears. It remains in view until we arrive at our destination, a park at the south Glenwood Springs City limits. Here passengers may de-board and take pictures. The Park is in a small valley with beautiful red cliffs on one side. If you cross the road you can stand on the bank high above the Roaring Fork River and view a small rapids. On the way you can listen to a narrative relating some of the history of the D&RG and Roaring Fork Valley.
